Breast Lift

A breast lift (mastopexy) raises and reshapes breasts that have lost volume and firmness due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, or gravity. Unlike augmentation, the goal isn’t to make you bigger — it’s to restore a more youthful position and shape using your own tissue.

What Actually Happens

The surgery involves removing excess skin, reshaping breast tissue, and repositioning your nipple to a higher, more natural location. Incision patterns vary based on how much lift you need — some women need only a small incision around the areola, while others need an anchor-shaped pattern that extends down and along the breast fold.

During your consultation, I’ll evaluate your anatomy and discuss which approach makes sense for your goals. If you’ve lost significant volume and want to be fuller, we can combine a lift with fat grafting or implants. If you’re happy with your size but just want things back where they used to be, a lift alone may be all you need.

Recovery Reality

Surgery takes 2–3 hours under general anesthesia. You’ll wake up in a surgical bra with some swelling and bruising. The first few days involve soreness and tightness, but most women describe this as more uncomfortable than painful.

You’ll wear a surgical bra 24/7 (except in the shower) for about 4–6 weeks. Most patients can return to desk work after a week or so. We will discuss returning to exercise based on what you do and how you’re healing, but most patients are back to full regular activity at 4–6 weeks.

Your incisions will likely be raised and quite visible at first — this is normal. They fade significantly over 12–18 months. Scars are permanent: they never 100 percent disappear. But I do everything I can to make them heal as beautifully as possible, and there are lots of adjuncts we can try down the line to make them even better.

Many patients worry about the vertical scar (from the bottom of the areola to the breast fold) which is understandable because it is not as well hidden as the other two. Mastopexy is all about trading better shape for scars, and putting a vertical scar there is incredibly powerful for improving your shape and projection, which is why we think it’s worth it in many cases.

Results Timeline

Your breasts will look lifted immediately, but they’ll also be swollen and sit higher than their final position. Over the first 2–3 months, swelling resolves and your breasts settle into their new shape.

Final results are typically visible around 6 months, though subtle changes continue through the first year. Results are long-lasting, but gravity and aging don’t stop — most women maintain their results for many years before considering a revision.

Q&A

Will I lose nipple sensation?

Many women experience some temporary numbness that improves over weeks to months. Permanent sensation changes are possible but uncommon. The more extensive the lift, the higher the risk.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Many women can still breastfeed after a lift, though some experience reduced milk production. If future breastfeeding is a priority, we should discuss this during your consultation — it may affect which technique I recommend.

How is this different from a breast reduction?

A reduction removes breast tissue to make you smaller. A lift repositions what you have without removing significant volume. These two operations are really on a continuum. Generally women who want a reduction also need a lift, and sometimes we combine a lift with a small reduction to meet a patient’s goals. The pattern of scars/incisions in both cases are essentially the same. If your breasts are causing back pain or physical symptoms, you might be a better candidate for a reduction.

Do I need a lift or just implants?

The nipple test: if your nipple sits at or below your breast fold, you likely need a lift. Implants alone add volume but won’t raise a drooping breast — they can actually make sagging more pronounced. During your consultation, we can talk about the tradeoffs based on your individual anatomy.
